Sitting out not an option for Pisani

Missing the morning skate was one thing, but sitting in the press box for the season-opener against the Flames last night was not an option for Fernando Pisani.

Despite the sore right knee that plagued Pisani during the pre-season, he was back alongside linemates Ethan Moreau and Jarret Stoll after the puck dropped.

"I wanted to play," said Pisani, who gutted it out for 17:31 of ice time. "It's the home-opener and there's a lot of excitement."

Pisani, 29, played in three pre-season games despite the knee, but sat against the Canucks last Saturday.

"It's just a case of us and him deciding whether this thing is something we need to address immediately through inactivity or something that we can continue to treat while he plays through it," said coach Craig MacTavish. "That's a decision that will be made with the medical staff."

Pisani cast his vote last night: "It's just something we're going to treat as best we can, then we'll get rid of as soon as we can."

Going forward

They toyed with the idea in the pre-season. Then they experimented with it.

Yesterday, the Edmonton Oilers sent five forwards over the boards on a two-man advantage in the first period.

It worked as Petr Sykora scored his first as an Oiler.

So they did it again later with a one-man advantage.

"We'll see that lots," said Craig MacTavish. "Stolli (Jarret Stoll), to me, is not at all a vulnerability on the back end with his decision-making and his skill. His ability to defend when he has to is as good as most defenceman."

Stoll and Sykora manned the points in the Oilers all-forward power play.

Both are familiar with that position, granted not always with another forward as a blue line partner.

"There is a lot of skill out there. You just want to try to get it in guys' hands and take your time out there," Stoll said.

Daniel Tjarnqvist and Marc-Andre Bergeron manned the point when they Oilers went with a more traditional power play.
