Matt Greene may have done Tom Gilbert a favour.
Greene's ability to make the jump straight from U.S. college hockey to the NHL may have opened some doors for other NCAA players like Gilbert.
"If Matt Greene did anything, it opened our eyes to what college players can do," said Oilers GM Kevin Lowe. "(Gilbert's) an intelligent player, he's certainly big enough and appears to be strong enough, but he'll have to get some games in with the big guys to see where he stands."
Gilbert, 23, was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche in the trade which sent goaltender Tommy Salo the other way in 2004.
Originally Gilbert was the Avalanche's fifth pick - 129th overall - in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
"I was impressed with him today," Lowe said. "He had the best results in the skating and for a guy who is a six-foot-three defenceman, that's a pretty good start."
