Three opt for judgments

Shawn Horcoff, Jarret Stoll and Ales Hemsky, three of Edmonton's four restricted free agents, filed for salary arbitration yesterday.

Only the recently acquired Joffrey Lupul has elected to work out his contract with the Oilers himself.

Going to arbitration means a judge will hear arguments for both sides and render a binding salary, guaranteeing a finish line in negotiations. The players and the Oilers can continue negotiating right up until the arbitration (hearings begin July 20).

The whole lot of them are due for fairly hefty raises, considering the bargain rates they went for last year (Stoll, $500,000, Hemsky, $900,000, Lupul 900,600 and Horcoff $1 million).

Meanwhile, having lost Jaroslav Spacek, the Oilers are still in talks with defenceman Dick Tarnstrom, who is also getting interest from other clubs in what has become a very inflated market for defencemen.
