LONG ISLAND -- As command performances go, Jani Rita failed his against Philadelphia Thursday in the estimation of coach Craig MacTavish and was back in the press box against the New York Islanders last night.
Rita, a healthy scratch in 10 straight games before drawing in against the Flyers, finished even with no points in 6:64 of playing time, but he didn't do enough to get the call last night.
His place was taken by Krys Kolanos.
"When a guy has sat out awhile, you want to see a certain amount of conviction in his game," MacTavish said.
"We didn't see enough of that, in my estimation."
Rita played right wing on a line with Jarret Stoll and Raffi Torres. After a couple decent shifts early, he got stapled to the pine.
"The opportunities get few and far between," MacTavish said.
"You've got to step up and grab it. You've got to do something out of your comfort zone, whether it's making a nice play coming out of your end on the boards, taking a hit to make a play, delivering a hit yourself.
"You've got to show everybody that you're going to take full advantage of the opportunity, whether it's five minutes or 15 minutes."
