Scoring still a problem

COLUMBUS -- Bulletin! Bulletin! Bulletin! Todd Marchant has difficulty finding the twine.

Marchant has heard it before when it comes to his, ahem, troubles cashing in on the numerous scoring chances he gets with this blazing speed, so the former Edmonton Oiler was thrilled to score his first goal of the season as his Columbus Blue Jackets beat St. Louis 3-1 Wednesday.

"It's not from a lack of opportunities," smiled Marchant, who got his second in as many games with the 1-1 goal in the first period against the Oilers last night. "My linemates and I have been generating chances. For whatever reason, nothing was bouncing in.

"Any time you go through something like that, you have to remind yourself it'll eventually change if you keep working hard."

Marchant had gone the first 15 games of this season without a goal when he beat Patrick Lalime, but his drought dated back to the 2003-04 season, when he scored just nine goals, a career low.

"That was, like, two years ago," said Marchant. "I didn't even know if it went in. It went post-to-post and I couldn't see. I asked the guys, 'Was it really in?' Thank God, it was."

No doubt about Marchant's second - he banged his own rebound past Jussi Markkanen 10:53 into the game to tie it.

TRIBUTE TO GREATS

Mike Morrison hasn't even made his first start with the Oilers, but his new mask pays homage to the tradition of the franchise.

Adorned with the team logo, as you'd expect, and a Boston Red Sox insignia, Morrison's mask also sports the "My team, My town" slogan and numbers 99, 31, 17, 7 and 3 to honour the retired jerseys of Wayne Gretzky, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey and Al Hamilton.

Morrison's old face-cover was a hand-me-down from former farmhand Chris Madden.

OILER ROW

The Blue Jackets have five former Oilers on their roster, and four of them - Marchant, Vyborny, Jason Chimera and Tyler Wright - sit side-by-side on one side of the dressing room. The other, Luke Richardson, is tucked away in another corner.
