SUN THREE STARS:

1. MIIKKA KIPRUSOFF, Calgary -- Made more than a handful of heartstopping saves to earn the shutout.

2. ALES HEMSKY, Edmonton -- Buzzed around the Flames zone and would have scored if not for Kiprusoff's best stop of the night.

3. JAROME IGINLA, Calgary -- Captain scored his second of the season on a partial breakaway.

- - -

TURNING POINT:

With both Jordan Leopold and Rhett Warrener in the sin bin simultaneously for hooking, the Flames killed the entire two minutes of 5-on-3 and averted possible disaster.

- - -

BIG SAVE:

Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff was outstanding but his best save came during a two-minute 5-on-3 Oilers advantage. Young sniper Ales Hemsky had an open net to shoot at but a diving Kiprusoff got his paddle on the airborne puck.

- - -

HARD HIT:

Oilers D Cory Cross was reaching for a loose puck along the boards in his zone as Darren McCarty pounded the 6-ft. 5-in., 225-pounder into the glass.

- - -

UNSUNG HERO:

Rugged Flames W Chris Simon worked hard to make things happen along the boards on the powerplay and skated hard to backcheck a speedy Oilers offence.

- - -

FIGHT CARD:

None.

- - -

SCRATCHES:

* Calgary -- D Robyn Regehr (knee) is on injured reserve. D Steve Montador, F Byron Ritchie and rookie F Eric Nystrom were healthy observers.

* Edmonton -- Captain Ryan Smyth (knee) is out indefinitely. F Shawn Horcoff (shoulder) and F Todd Harvey (ankle) were last night's walking wounded while D Alexei Semenov was a healthy scratch.

BURNING QUESTION:

Can the Flames continue to play that kind of inspired hockey against a team that doesn't reside in the same province?

- - -

WHAT IT MEANS:

Flames fans can rest easy knowing Kiprusoff is still capable of highlight-reel saves.

- - -

NOTEWORTHY:

Both the Flames and Oilers lost to the Dallas Stars this week by the same 3-2 score ... The Flames are 0-3-1 this season when their opponent scores first. The Oilers are now 1-3.
