The return of the NHL's storied Battle of Alberta tonight will resemble more of a celebration than a combat zone, as thousands of people are expected to turn out for a full night of family friendly fun outside the Saddledome.

Co-sponsored by the Flames and the Sun, the Telus Late Night Tailgate is to draw thousands of fans on top of a sell-out crowd watching the game from inside the arena, said the team's promotions manager Cheryl Sundell.

"It should be a really good turnout," she said.

"The weather is supposed to co-operate and it's the first Battle of Alberta, which is usually a good one."

Sundell said people who come to the arena for the party will be able to watch a live feed of the game on a huge video screen.

Starting at 6 p.m. and running until midnight, the party will feature ticket giveaways every 15 minutes, along with other prizes, including five people who will get to go on the ice during the second intermission to compete for a brand new Ford Mustang.

Sun marketing director Di Wensel said while the party will feature an adults-only area for alcohol, the focus is on giving fans of all ages a chance to cheer on the Flames.

"We just wanted to create a fun atmosphere outside the 'Dome," she said. "It's for everyone -- every Flames fan, big or small."

Entrance to the party is free, and food and beverages will be for sale.
