Cloutier hears boo-birds at home

While Todd Bertuzzi will bear the fans' wrath on the road, Vancouver Canucks goalie Dan Cloutier is bound to hear it from the fickle faithful on the Wet Coast.

It may be unfair to lay all of the Canucks' recent playoff failures at Cloutier's crease, but he seems to be the scapegoat despite his regular-season successes.

"The first thing (ex-Canucks GM) Brian Burke told me when I got there was that I shouldn't let the media or fans get to me because they're tough on goalies. Since then it doesn't really affect me," said Cloutier.

The former Canadian national junior team puckstopper has recorded a pair of 33-win regular seasons for the Canucks, but his playoff numbers haven't lived up to his scheduled campaigns.

Cloutier's 10-13 record and 3.31 GAA in the post-season have provided enough fodder for Vancouver fans to declare the need for a playoff -proven goalie.

Vancouver's quick exit in the 2004 playoffs came with Cloutier on the shelf due to an injury and Bertuzzi serving a suspension.

Yet even in his absence, Cloutier was further vilified, which led to elevated scuttlebutt that the Canucks should utilize the free-agent spending frenzy after the lockout to pursue a goalie.

Vancouver did land former St. Louis Blue Brent Johnson, but he was subsequently put on waivers and the team opted stay with Cloutier and heir-apparent Alex Auld.

ANSON'S NEW HOME: Anson Carter has found a new home with a spot on the team's second line alongside Henrik and Daniel Sedin.

It looks to be a fine fit. Carter can even distinquish between the two now.

"One has a goatee and the other doesn't," said Carter. "The good part is that they think the game the same way, so you only have to learn how to play with one new guy and not two."

Carter hasn't found a comfort zone since leaving here.

"They've taken a lot of heat the last few years, but I can see why," said Carter. "Expectations should be high for them because they're tremendous players."
