A done deal today?

That's entirely possible.

While Ryan Smyth was on the ice for the first day of training camp at Rexall Place yesterday, the Edmonton Oilers and agent Don Meehan made significant progress in negotiations on a multi-year contract for the veteran forward.

Barring something unforeseen, indications are the parties are closing in on a three-year contract - a deal that would take Smyth through the 2007-08 season. It could be announced as early as today.

The Oilers and Meehan have had a one-year deal on the table for slightly more than Smyth's qualifying offer of $2.698 million while discussing terms of two, three and four years.

The sides narrowed their focus to terms of two and three years yesterday, with a three-year pact being most likely.

While Smyth declined comment on the likelihood of an announcement today, he did say he expected a deal to be in place by Friday.
