Has the jury reached a decision?

Igor Ulanov will never know, although if given the opportunity some time in the future he'd gladly accept the challenge of deciding someone's fate in a court of law. But Ulanov's top priority is manning the Edmonton Oilers' blue line, meaning he won't be able to take on the role of juror in a Toronto courtroom.

"I received a letter a couple of months ago that I could be picked and I just recently received another letter saying that I'm one of the jurors, so it's kind of thrown me off," said Ulanov, who was among the first to arrive for yesterday's team physicals at the University of Alberta Butterdome.

Ulanov isn't sure what the case is about, only that the trial is supposed to begin Sept. 26. Once a few different documents are taken care of, he'll be cleared from jury duty.

"Out of thousands and thousands of people they pick me, it's kind of weird," said the rugged defenceman. "There are people who are born here and have never been picked. It's interesting for me.

"During the lockout year I would have done it but right now there's no time."

Ulanov, who signed a fresh one-year deal with the Oil in August, will line up at training camp on Team White paired with rookie Matt Greene. The Russian Torpedo flanked by the Mean Greene Machine. Anyone skating through the neutral zone with their head down best have his life insurance paid up.

"I'm sure they can learn and I'm sure they will but it's up to them if they pay attention and listen," said Ulanov, who's an example of fortitude to the youngsters having overcome a couple of frightening injuries during his career.

"But most of the guys the organization has selected have been good listeners and have learned very fast so those guys will improve during the year."

ICE CHIPS: Team Blue, featuring Ryan Smyth, Georges Laraque, Yan Stastny, Rob Schremp and Chris Pronger, will be on the ice from 9 to 11 a.m. today while Team White, headlined by Mike Peca, Marc-Antoine Pouliot, Matt Greene and Ty Conklin, will follow from 11:30 to 1:30. The Joey Moss Cup will be staged tomorrow at 7 p.m. ... The Oilers returned goalie Aaron Sorochan and forward Braden Appleby to the University of Alberta Golden Bears, and also shipped out minor-league goalie Brett Jaeger and former Bear Joel Andresen, who will report to the ECHL's Victoria Salmon Kings.
