"Times have changed. It's a new CBA and a new market out there for everyone. I think it really benefits our squad."

Former Edmonton Oilers captain Al Hamilton was like many fans who woke up yesterday to the news that Chris Pronger had signed.

"I picked up the paper and I went, 'What?' " he said. "I've sat here for how many years and when they had free agency, the (players would) head for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow."

Hamilton said the deal "gives credibility" to the process the NHL went through to agree on a new CBA.

"It's great news. It will create a ton of excitement."

After years of trading away top players, former Edmonton Oilers forward Dave Hunter said it's too bad players like Eric Brewer had to go.

"You have to give up something. Too bad you can't just give away nothing," he joked.

"I think Chris (Pronger) is a great player. it's great that the Oilers have the opportunity to grab someone like that.

"He will be great on the power play, he's great defensively.

"That's great for the Oilers."

Chris Pronger admitted to being surprised at ending up in Edmonton.

"I was a little bit, I'm not going to lie to you," he said yesterday.

"As was stated earlier, they were always the ones trading, not acquiring ... Once they did come into the fray, the way they jumped on it fast and hard was kind of the way Oilers hockey is played."
