Mark Scheifele is the first draft pick of the new Winnipeg Jets.
Scheifele, who hails from Kitchener, Ont., had 22 goals and 75 points in 66 games with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League last season.
Earlier in the day, general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said he was open to moving up or down but at the end of the day he decided to stick with the No. 7 selection.
Barring a trade, Winnipeg won’t pick again until the third round (67th overall) as they surrendered their second round pick in 2011 in the trade to acquire captain Andrew Ladd.
The first six picks of the draft were Red Deer Rebels centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Edmonton Oilers), Kitchener Rangers left-winger Gabriel Ladeskog (Colorado Avalanche), Saint John Sea Dogs centre Jonathan Huberdeau (Florida Panthers), Swedish defenceman Adam Larsson (New Jersey Devils), Niagra Ice Dogs centre Ryan Strome (New York Islanders) and Swedish centre Mika Zibanejad (Ottawa Senators).
