Red Wings lock up Helm

The Detroit Red Wings and forward Darren Helm have agreed on a four-year contract worth $8.5 million.
Helm, who was set to become a restricted free agent, had nine goals and 17 assists in 68 games last season. He was cut on his right forearm in Game 1 of a first-round matchup against Nashville and missed the remainder of the playoffs. The 25-year-old Winnipeg native needed surgery to repair lacerated tendons.
"Darren is an important part of our team and we're very happy that we've reached an agreement," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "He's one of the fastest skaters in the game and we love the physical element that he brings. He's an outstanding penalty killer and the ideal third-line centre for us, behind Pavel (Datsyuk) and Henrik (Zetterberg). We really missed him when he was out of the lineup in March and April."
Helm has 32 goals and 51 assists in 248 NHL games, all with the Red Wings.
