Report: Wings to host Leafs in Winter Classic
By QMI Agency
The Toronto Maple Leafs will take part in next year's Winter Classic in Detroit, according to an online report.
Mlive.com, citing a source, says the NHL, Red Wings and the University of Michigan have finalized a deal that will see Michigan Stadium host the popular annual outdoor game between the Original Six teams.
The matchup between the Wings and Leafs will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013.
The Leafs will become the first Canadian team to play in the Winter Classic, the sixth time it will be held. Similarly, Canada has held two Heritage Classics, in Edmonton and Calgary.
Wings owner Mike Ilitch, who also owns the Detroit Tigers, suggested the game be played at the baseball team's Comerica Park, but the NHL couldn't pass up an opportunity to attract a record crowd in excess of 110,000.
The report also states that an official announcement won't be made until early February.
