NHL Playoffs: DET @ CHI

Just call him captain Lidstrom
By LANCE HORNBY -- Toronto Sun

The last time the Detroit Red Wings had to pick a new captain, John Brophy was coaching the Maple Leafs, who had no captian of their own under Harold Ballard's orders.

The favourite to replace the retiring Steve Yzerman is Nicklas Lidstrom, though Wings' coach Mike Babcock called a published story regarding that announcement "premature."

It's expected the 36-year-old Lidstrom, a multi-Norris Trophy award winner, will be named captain closer to training camp. The Wings also had considered young forward Henrik Zetterberg, whom they positioned next to Yzerman in the dressing room last season to gain insight about the position which Yzerman had held since 1986.

The 41-year-old Yzerman is expected to be named to a prominent off-ice role with the Wings next month.
