It appears that star forward Pavel Datsyuk is returning from Russia to rejoin the Detroit Red Wings.

Wings general manager Ken Holland said last night that he had been contacted by Datsyuk's agent and was told the player had decided to turn down offers from Russian teams in order to accept a two-year offer from the Wings.

"Pavel is in transit right now from Moscow to his hometown," Holland said.

After that, Datsyuk will get his affairs in order and fly to Detroit. Holland said he expects him to arrive within the next five days.

Holland said that the two sides had never broken off talks.

"I think he wanted to be in Detroit," Holland said, "but at the same time, he had legitimate and substantial offers being offered to him by teams in Russia."

Datsyuk had signed with a Russian team, but his status had been disputed.

"I don't know what's going on with his Russian contract," Holland said. "I do know that (today) was the scheduled arbitration to decide who owns his rights in the Russian league. Pavel will not be at that arbitration.

"At this stage of the game, it looks like Pavel is going to be coming back to Detroit unless something gets derailed over the next 24-48 hours."
