So much for a youth movement with the Dallas Stars.

The Stars announced the signing of defenceman Sergei Gonchar Saturday, a day after acquiring him from the Ottawa Senators for a sixth-round draft pick. The two-year deal is reportedly worth $10 million.

The Stars appeared to be trying to get younger after dealing away aging stars Brenden Morrow and Jaromir Jagr at the trade deadline. New general manager Jim Nill clearly has other ideas.

Gonchar, 39, is in the final year of a three-year, $16.5 million deal and would have become an unrestricted free agent next month. The Senators were unwilling to give him more than a one-year deal, so he was traded to the Stars.

Teams from the KHL in Russia were also interested in signing Gonchar, who had three goals and 24 assists in 45 games with the Senators in 2012-13. He played three seasons with the Sens, recording 15 goals and 76 assists.
