Modano signs one-day contract with Stars
By QMI Agency
The Dallas Stars have signed veteran forward Mike Modano to a one-day contract, in anticipation of his retirement Friday as a member of the franchise.
The price of the brief deal is a ceremonial $999,999, in honour of the No. 9 Modano wore with the Stars.
Modano announced Wednesday he would retire after 21 NHL seasons, the first 20 with the Stars organization. He will hold a press conference Friday in Dallas.
"This is a special day for all of us," Stars general manager and former teammate Joe Nieuwendyk said. "Mike Modano will always be the face of this franchise. He means so much to our organization and all of our fans. We wanted to give him the opportunity to retire as a Dallas Star. Mike has given his heart and soul to this game for over 30 years."
Modano was drafted first overall by the Stars in 1988. The Michigan native played for the Detroit Red Wings last year.
The 41-year-old is the leading scorer among American-born players with 561 goals and 1,374 points.
