DALLAS -- The Stars have signed coach Dave Tippett to a one-year contract extension, through the end of the 2008-09 season.

Tippett is 212-109-45 in five seasons, the best record among active coaches. The 46-year-old has led the Stars to two 50-win seasons.

"Dave has done an outstanding job since the day he started here in Dallas and we expect that to continue," co-general manager Les Jackson said in a statement yesterday.

Tippett's deal was set to expire in June.

"Our goal of winning the Stanley Cup has not changed over the years and we'll continue to pursue that goal together," Tippett said in a statement.

DENIS PUT ON WAIVERS

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Lightning put goaltender Marc Denis on NHL waivers yesterday.

If he clears waivers today, the Lightning will send the 30-year-old to AHL Norfolk.

Denis was 1-5-0 with a 4.05 GAA and .859 save percentage in 10 games with the Lightning this season. He became the odd man out after Tampa recalled rookie Karri Ramo. Johan Holmqvist is the other goalie for the Lightning.

Denis is earning $2.8-million US this season and will make $3 million next season.

ISLANDERS SIGN OKPOSO

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The New York Islanders signed top prospect Kyle Okposo to a three-year, entry level contract yesterday.

Okposo, playing for the United States at the world junior tournament, reached a deal with the Islanders just more than a week after he left the University of Minnesota.

He will join the Islanders organization, which selected him with the No. 7 pick in the 2006 NHL draft, after the junior tournament is over.

The 19-year-old right winger from St. Paul, Minn., already has a goal and two assists in two games with the American team.
