Jackets ink Umberger for five more years
By QMI Agency

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward R.J. Umberger to a five-year contract extension through the 2016-17 season.

The deal is reported to be worth $23 million.

Umberger, who could have become an unrestricted free agent July 1, has not missed a game since the Blue Jackets acquired him in a June 2008 trade with the Philadelphia Flyers. The 29-year-old had 25 goals and 32 assists last season.

"R.J.'s commitment to the team and the city has been impactful since we acquired him three years ago," Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson said in a statement Wednesday.

Umberger has 123 goals and 151 assists in 474 career games. He spent his first three NHL seasons in Philadelphia.
