Game over

STEVE MACFARLANE -- Calgary Sun

, Last Updated: 11:56 AM ET

SUN THREE STARS

1. JASON CHIMERA, BLUE JACKETS

2. MANNY MALHOLTRA, BLUE JACKETS

3. DAYMOND LANGKOW, FLAMES

- - -

TURNING POINT:

Jason Chimera's goal with 2:47 to play hurt but Cale Hulse's four-minute high-sticking penalty sealed the Blue Jackets upset.

- - -

BIG SAVE:

Stephane Yelle sent a wrister at the top corner after collecting a cross-ice pass in the first period. Blue Jackets stopper Marc Denis had other ideas, though, as he jumped across the crease to swat Yelle's effort away with the blocker.

- - -

HARD HIT:

Dion Phaneuf rocked Jason Chimera with a shoulder along the side boards while pinching late in the first period, sending Chimera backwards onto his backside. But the highlight-reel hit came late in the second when Rostislav Klesla sent Marcus Nilson thrashing over the boards and into his own bench, bringing the crowd to life.

- - -

UNSUNG HERO:

Rick Nash didn't capitalize on any offensive chances but he made a key backcheck to prevent Daymond Langkow from breaking in alone on Marc Denis in the second period.

- - -

FIGHT CARD:

None. But there was plenty of rough stuff in a spirited affair.

- - -

SCRATCHES:

* CALGARY -- C Matthew Lombardi, D Bryan Marchment, D Rhett Warrener (knee) and F Mike Leclerc (wrist).

* COLUMBUS -- D Bryan Berard (back) and F Mike Rupp (irregular heartbeat). F Dan Fritsche was assigned to the AHL Syracuse Crunch yesterday morning.

- - -

BURNING QUESTION:

Who is going to step up and be the Flames' enforcer? Jarome Iginla got pasted headfirst into the boards by Adam Foote and there was no retribution.

- - -

WHAT IT MEANS:

With no games in hand, the Flames miss out on a chance to extend their lead to four or five points over idle Colorado. The extra point for an overtime or shootout finish would have helped. The loss makes tomorrow's game in Dallas even more important to finish at .500 on the trip.

- - -

NOTEWORTHY:

C Matthew Lombardi sat out his second straight game in favour of C Jamie Lundmark, who was picked up from the Phoenix Coyotes at the trade deadline for a fourth-round draft pick ... F Rick Nash joined C Jan Hrdina and F David Vyborny on the second scoring unit, while rookie F Alexandre Picard moved up to play with C Sergei Fedorov and F Nikolai Zherdev ... F Shean Donovan was smoked in the face with the puck in the third period and had to leave the game for some repairs.
