CHICAGO -- If the Chicago Blackhawks are going to reach the playoffs, they might have to secure a berth without their top sniper.

Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville announced Tuesday that forward Patrick Sharp is going to be out of the lineup, but hopes he can return before the end of the regular season.

Sharp was injured in a knee-on-knee collision with Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Rostislav Klesla on Sunday.

The 29-year-old ranks fifth in the league with 34 goals, two shy of his career high set in 2007-08, and his 68 points (a new personal best) places him second on the club behind captain Jonathan Toews.

Chicago is sixth in the Western Conference with 86 points, one more than 10th- place Calgary.
