TORONTO -- Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Niklas Hjalmarsson was suspended for two games and fined by the National Hockey League on Wednesday for his hit on Buffalo Sabres forward Jason Pominville in the Blackhawks' 4-3 win on Monday.

Pominville, who was hit from behind along the boards by Hjalmarsson with 5:42 remaining in the opening period, suffered a concussion and a cut above his eyes after his head hit against the glass.

Hjalmarsson was given a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct for his effort. He will forfeit $37,634.40 in salary, which automatically goes toward the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

The 23-year-old Swede will miss Wednesday's contest with Nashville and Friday's tilt against Columbus. He is eligible to come back when Chicago faces Buffalo on Saturday at United Center.
