CHICAGO - The Chicago Blackhawks have assigned goaltender Cristobal Huet to HC Fribourg-Gotteron SA of the Swiss National League A.

It has been a move rumored for some time, especially when considering Chicago's salary cap issues. The team has been forced to gut a roster that captured the Stanley Cup back in June, trading playoff hero Dustin Byfuglien to Atlanta and Kris Versteeg to Toronto to relieve some of the pressure.

The 'Hawks also elected to sign veteran Marty Turco to replace Cup-winning goalie Antti Niemi, who was allowed to become an unrestricted free agent after Chicago refused an arbitrator's award. Niemi has since signed with the San Jose Sharks.

By sending Huet to Switzerland, the Blackhawks will remove the Frenchman's reported $5.625 million salary.

Last season, Huet appeared in 48 games for Chicago, posting a 26-14-4 record with a 2.50 goals-against average and .895 save percentage.
