The Stanley Cup is coming to Winnipeg this weekend.
Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews will bring the NHL's Holy Grail to River City for a public celebration on Sunday, the Mayor's office announced Tuesday.
The Winnipeg native, who also won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the top playoff player and was a 2010 Olympic gold medallist, will be joined by Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz at three different locations on Sunday.
First, there will be a celebration at City Hall Court Yard at 11 a.m.-noon where Toews's achievements over the past year will be feted. Toews and Blackhawks teammates Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook became only the fourth, fifth and sixth players in NHL history to have won an Olympic gold and a Stanley Cup in the same year. With Chicago's win, Toews also joined the Triple Gold Club with a Stanley Cup plus gold medals at an Olympics and a world championship (2007 in Moscow).
Then, the Cup will be paraded from from Ѐcole Christine-Lespérance (425 John Forsythe Rd.) to Dakota Community Club (1188 Dakota St.). A celebration will follow at the club, where Toews spent much of his formative hockey years, at 2 p.m.
