CHICAGO -- The Blackhawks will wear NIU Huskies decals on their helmets during today's home game to honour those killed in the shooting at Northern Illinois University.

The Blackhawks play the Colorado Avalanche today. The team announced it also plans to wear the decals at St. Louis on Tuesday night and at home against Minnesota on Wednesday night.

The decal replicates the overlay of a black ribbon and Huskies logo that currently appears on NIU's official website.

The team will also observe a moment of silence before the national anthem at today's game.

A 27-year-old graduate student killed five people in a NIU lecture hall Thursday before killing himself.

'CANES ACTIVATE CULLEN

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Carolina activated centre Matt Cullen from the injured reserve last night before the Hurricanes' game against the Florida Panthers.

Earlier in the day, they sent defenceman Joey Mormina back to their American Hockey League affiliate in Albany, N.Y.

Cullen, Carolina's third-line centre and a key member of its power-play unit, missed seven games with distorted vision. He missed 16 of 22 games after he suffered a concussion when he was hit by New York Rangers forward Colton Orr on Dec. 26. He is fourth on the team with 39 points.

Mormina was returned to the AHL two days after he made his NHL debut during the Hurricanes' 4-2 victory against Pittsburgh on Thursday night. He had four hits in 7:45 of ice time.

GIRARDI GETS EXTENSION

NEW YORK -- Rangers defenceman Dan Girardi received a two-year contract extension yesterday worth $3.1 million US.

The deal with the 23-year-old Girardi, in his second NHL season, was announced during New York's 5-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. He could have become a restricted free agent on July 1.

Girardi has eight goals and 14 assists this season and has played in all 60 games.

The Rangers also assigned forward Marcel Hossa to Hartford of the AHL.

Hossa has been sidelined with back spasms since January 14 and was placed on injured reserve two weeks later. The Slovak has missed the Rangers' past nine games.

He has one goal and seven assists in 35 games this season.
