The Carolina Hurricanes are rewarding Alexander Semin with a five-year contract extension worth $35 million.

Semin joined the Hurricanes this season as a free agent, racking up eight goals and 22 assists in 30 games.

"Alex is an elite player and has been a major contributor to the Hurricanes having a very strong top line," general manager Jim Rutherford said.

Semin, who has 205 goals and 233 assists in 499 career NHL games, signed a one-year contract worth $7 million this season after spending the first seven years of his career with the Washington Capitals.

The Russian winger has helped 'Canes captain Eric Staal rack up 14 goals and 35 points this season.
