'Canes in for Parise?

The Carolina Hurricanes have targeted New Jersey Devils captain Zach Parise as their prize off-season acquisition.

Parise is set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1 and the Hurricanes are expected to go hard after him, according to the Charlotte News and Observer. The thinking is the 'Canes need a top-flight winger to play with centre Eric Staal.

In 82 games this season, his seventh in the NHL, Parise had 31 goals and 38 assists. He has surpassed 30 goals five times, topping out at 45 in 2008-09.

Carolina has nearly $100 million tied up in long-term deals with Staal and goalie Cam Ward but owner Peter Karmanos is apparently willing to write Parise a big check once he hits the free-agent market.
