Tuomo Ruutu is off the market.

The Carolina Hurricanes signed Ruutu to a four-year, $19 million contract extension Wednesday, ending the trade rumours that dogged the veteran forward for weeks. He will be paid $4 million next season and $5 million in each if the following years.

"Players like Tuomo are extremely difficult to replace, and it is very important for our franchise to keep him here long term," Rutherford told the Hurricanes' website. "Along with the physical elements and skill level that he brings on the ice, Tuomo is a popular leader in our locker room. We are very happy that he has committed to what we are building here, and is excited about what the future holds for the Hurricanes."

In 57 games this season, the 29-year-old Finn has 17 goals and 13 assists. He's also second on the team in hits, with 106.

BIG BERT CLOSE TO DEAL

Todd Bertuzzi is close to signing a two-year contract extension with the Detroit Red Wings, his agent said Wednesday.

Pat Morris says the deal to keep his client in Detroit could be announced as soon as Thursday. The new contract would have a salary-cap hit of $2.2 million per season.

"We're working at it, and getting closer," Morris told the Detroit Free Press.

Bertuzzi is in the final year of a two-year contract worth close to $4 million.

The 37-year-old forward has 12 goals and 17 assists in 54 games this season while mostly playing alongside Pavel Datsyuk and Johan Franzen. In 225 games over three seasons with the Red Wings, he has 48 goals and 74 assists.

HEAD GAMES?

The Chicago Blackhawks aren't saying what's ailing Jonathan Toews but sources told ChicagoNow.com that his upper-body injury is a concussion.

The report also says Toews was hurt Feb. 10 against the San Jose Sharks but the severity of the concussion isn't yet known. If the report is accurate, Toews played five games while concussed.

"Not getting into too much specifics, it was something we talked about after (Sunday's) game," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "Tazer is progressing. Still day-to-day, out for tomorrow."

Toews will miss Thursday's game against the Dallas Stars. He also sat out Chicago's win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.
