RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes acquired defenseman Bryan Allen from the Florida Panthers in exchange for forward Sergei Samsonov on Monday.

Allen, 30, notched four goals and 12 points in 53 games for the Panthers this season. The Ontario native was the last remaining player obtained in the Roberto Luongo trade shortly before the 2006 draft.

In 500 career games, Allen has compiled 28 goals and 71 assists.

"Bryan is a good addition to our defnese," said 'Canes general manager Jim Rutherford. "He has great character and experience and will add size and grit to our team."

Samsonov, a former first-round pick and Calder Trophy winner as the league's top rookie in 1998, had 10 goals and 16 assists in 58 games for Carolina.

The 32-year-old has 232 goals and 325 assists in 868 career games with Boston, Edmonton, Montreal, Chicago and the Hurricanes.
