Skinner named rookie of month

NEW YORK -- Carolina Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner has been selected as the NHL's top rookie for the month of January.

Skinner posted nine goals and five assists in 14 games during the first month of the new calendar year. He posted at least one point nine contests and tallied two goals on two different occasions. The Hurricanes were 6-1-0 in games that Skinner scored and 8-4-2 overall in the month.

The Markham, Ont., native also had the chance to play in front of the home fans during last weekend's All-Star game and notched an assist for Team Staal. Skinner, at 18 years and 259 days, became the youngest All-Star in league history, eclipsing the mark set by Steve Yzerman in 1984 by eight days.

The seventh overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Skinner has posted 18 goals and 40 points in 51 games so far this season.

Others considered for the monthly honour were Boston forward Brad Marchand, Buffalo forward Tyler Ennis, New York Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello and Philadelphia goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky.
