CALGARY - The Calgary Flames are giving defenceman Sheldon Brookbank a shot to earn a job on their blueline this season.

The Flames confirmed Friday that the 33-year-old Brookbank, who spent the past two winters with the Chicago Blackhawks and had his name engraved on the Stanley Cup, has been invited to training camp in Calgary on a tryout basis.

“I think there’s a real opportunity there,” Brookbank told the Chicago Tribune. “I know they have six guys there they want and they have a few good young players, but I think there’s a place where I might have a chance.”

The Flames' blueline brigade is anchored by captain Mark Giordano and up-and-comer TJ Brodie, with returnees Kris Russell, Ladislav Smid and Dennis Wideman and free-agent acquisition Deryk Engelland also expected to be in the opening-night lineup.
