CALGARY - The Calgary Flames were impressed with what they saw from Lance Bouma last season.

Now, they want to see it again.

Bouma finally inked a new contract Wednesday with the Flames, but it’s only a one-year pact — we know it’s a one-way deal, but the financial specifics remain a mystery — so the gritty forward will be a restricted free agent again next summer.

“I like Lance. I think he’s a heart-and-soul kind of guy. He’s a competitive player,” said Flames GM Brad Treliving. “I think, last year, he showed a little bit in terms of really establishing identity for his game. Obviously, it’s been spoken about his work on the penalty-kill. He’s showing the willingness to sacrifice himself for the team. So there’s a lot of intangible pieces with him that I’ve noticed from afar for a number of years now.

“But the challenge for Lance, and for all players, is to now take that next step, to build upon what they did last year.”

Challenge accepted.
