CALGARY - Not all hockey fans understand the NHL's salary arbitration process.

Restricted free-agent Joe Colborne is learning that the hard way.

Yes, Colborne filed for arbitration and, yes, he has an Aug. 1 hearing with the Calgary Flames brass, but it's almost a certainty the local lad will be back with his hometown team next winter — not the other way around.

“I had people texting me, like, 'What?!? I thought you enjoyed being in Calgary?' ” said Colborne, describing the reaction as word spread that he filed for arbitration earlier this month. “And I'm like, 'I do! When have I ever not enjoyed being in Calgary?'

“This is the one spot I want to be. It's my hometown. I get to play in front of my family and my friends ... So it was kind of funny when I heard some of those comments.”

There's nothing funny about NHL arbitration hearings.
