CALGARY - There are a lot of hours to fill before the Calgary Flames report to the Saddledome for training camp in September.

If head coach Bob Hartley — a meticulous planner — is feeling bored, the good news it that tinkering with his depth chart should take up a bit more time than usual.

“There are no more one-on-one battles — it’s almost like a royal rumble,” Hartley said between Tuesday’s sessions at Flames summer development camp at WinSport’s Markin MacPhail Centre.

“You look at the left wing, at the centre position, at the right wing, at the blueline, in net … We’re starting to have depth.

“There’s going to be lots of long nights and long meetings.”

That is, in case you were wondering, a good thing.

This is still a rebuilding bunch, but you could argue Hartley will have more legitimate options for his opening-night lineup this winter than in his two previous NHL seasons as the bench boss in Calgary.
