Sam Bennett isn’t expecting that he’ll just be handed a spot on the Calgary Flames roster this season.

He expects to grab it for himself.

The club’s first-round draft choice has arrived in the Stampede City for the summer prospects camp but the centre selected fourth overall a week ago at the NHL Draft in Philadelphia expects to use this week as the springboard to claiming a big-league spot when the season opens in October.

“That’s gonna be my goal, in this camp and in training camp, to prove that I’m ready and do whatever I can to make the team,” Bennett said after he completed his fitness testing Friday at the WinSport facility at Canada Olympic Park. “That’s ultimately the goal.

“I definitely want to leave a good impression on everyone that’s watching. This is more the development camp so it’s more for the players to develop and all that, but definitely I’m looking to show myself and definitely leave a good impression.
