CALGARY - That eye-popping NHL contract handed Deryk Engelland won’t suddenly make him a standout blueliner for the Calgary Flames.

By no means should it be expected Engelland will become a top-four defencemen, have some form or offensive outburst — in fact, don't be shocked if his production decreases having gone from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Flames — or bring fans to their feet with coast-to-coast rushes.

The contract, three years at US$2.9 million per season given by the Flames to the free-agent, won’t be earned that way.

It will be by protecting the burgeoning crop of young players the Flames are looking to integrate in the next few years.
