Brad Treliving will not be a silent partner.

Just hours after being hired Monday as GM of the Flames, Treliving promised he would be constantly consulting Calgary's president of hockey operations, Brian Burke.

“I'm going to be bending Brian's ear as often and more than he probably thinks I will be, and it would be silly not to,” Treliving said.

His old boss believes it.

“It wasn't a situation where we would talk on a daily basis. We'd talk, probably, on an hourly basis,” said Phoenix Coyotes GM Don Maloney, describing his relationship with his former right-hand man.

“Losing a confidante, a guy that was exposed to everything, doesn't exactly make my day ... But for us here in Phoenix, I'm really proud and happy for him and his family. When you work as hard as he did, he deserves an opportunity to run an NHL club.”

Thanks to the Flames, that opportunity has arrived.
