Since they missed the playoffs for a fifth straight spring, the rebuilding Calgary Flames will categorize 2013-14 as a failure.

It might have been disappointing, but it was never dull.

The Flames open their season in D.C., frittering away a three-goal lead in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Washington Capitals. Starting netminder Karri Ramo stops 35 shots, but the Flames' coaching staff isn't overly impressed and he's a spectator for the next five games.
