NEWARK, N.J. — Sean Monahan is returning to where his NHL career started.

Monahan officially became part of the Calgary Flames family at The Prudential Center — aka, The Rock — when selected sixth overall in the 2013 NHL Draft.

“It’s fresh in your mind and it’s a lot of fun,” the centre said after Sunday’s practice in Newark, N.J. “This is an arena where I’ll always remember having my name called by the Flames and sharing that moment with my family.

“I was pretty excited and anxious to see where I was going to be picked.”

The organization is as excited now as it was then.

As the team plays out the string, starting with Monday’s clash against the New Jersey Devils, Monahan’s rookie campaign is a success and a positive start to the club’s rebuild.

Through 71 games — he missed seven due to a broken bone in his foot — Monahan has managed 20 goals and 32 points.
