CALGARY - Head down with eyes shielded by the brim of his ball cap, Matt Stajan spoke of his road back from the unspeakable Monday.
Returning to the team two weeks after and he and wife Katie lost their first child shortly after being born, the classy Calgary Flames forward wanted it known how much the overwhelming support has meant to them.
He wanted to thank the organization, fans, the hockey fraternity and his teammates for their compassion, space and support.
He also wanted it known he’s ready to play again, Tuesday night.
It’s a surprising yet heartening return for a man who could easily have skipped the final 14 games of the season.
“You don’t know what to think,” said Stajan, 30, when asked how he weighed when to return to the game.
“The organization and Brian Burke and Ken King and everyone has been unbelievable. And they said straight out to me that if I take the rest of the year off that’s fine. ‘Do whatever you need to do.’
