CALGARY - The camaraderie is one of the best parts of being on a hockey team.
That camaraderie is what the Calgary Flames are hoping will help Matt Stajan and his wife Katie cope with the tragic loss of their newborn son last week.
“It's such a devastating blow to everybody that's close to them. They were so excited (to be parents),” winger Brian McGrattan said after Monday's morning skate.
“What happened to them, 99% of us will never be able to relate to, but we can be here as great teammates, great friends, be there for support. We have a tight-knit group that has each other's back.
“He's a big part of our team, a big part of everybody's life in here, so whatever they need, we're there,” added McGrattan, who, along with his wife, Michelle, went on a vacation with Matt and Katie Stajan during the Olympic break.
“Everybody thinks we're different because we're professional athletes, but we're all human, too, and life hits us like it hits everybody else. Unfortunately for Staje, something happened none of us will probably every go through.”
The Stajans' son, Emerson, was born March 3, and passed away soon after.
