CALGARY - One of the biggest things Calgary Flames fans could’ve hoped for this season was a solid showing by Michael Cammalleri.

The better he played, the easier it would be to cash in the team’s biggest bargaining chip come the NHL trade deadline.

Signing him to an extension was never a realistic goal unless the 31-year-old Toronto-area sniper was willing to take a pay-cut to stay here as part of what promises to be a lengthy rebuilding process.

Not going to happen.

He will almost certainly test free agency July 1 unless the team that acquires him by Wednesday’s 1 p.m. trade deadline is able to come to terms with him before then.

Flames acting GM Brian Burke revealed last week the Flames offered Cammalleri a contract extension, one which is almost certainly several million dollars less a year than he will get on the open market.

So he will leave Calgary via trade.
