CALGARY - The Christmas Day departure is a tradition that Joe Colborne won’t miss.

For the first few seasons of his professional puck career, Colborne was usually boarding a bird from Calgary back to Providence or Toronto just hours after Santa Claus finished unloading his sleigh.

Not this time.

Now in his first season as a member of the Flames, the 23-year-old centre wasn’t just home for the holidays.

He’s home, period.

“I’ve been home (in years past), but it was like I was always flying out on Christmas morning every year,” Colborne said prior to the Flames’ three-day holiday break.

“I’d come back on the 23rd, and we would have Christmas Eve as our Christmas because I’m gone the next day. They’d have our big family dinner on Christmas, but my close family would come over on Christmas Eve because that’s the only time I would see them.

“To have a couple of days where I can just hang with the family, that’s going to be nice.”
