CALGARY - One NHL career shootout attempt.

One NHL career shootout goal.

One NHL career shootout winner.

Sean Monahan’s rookie season of highlights added a new chapter with his winner in the Calgary Flames 5-4 shootout victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday.

His difference-making goal was the kind of play teams need from key players. Maybe even a sign he can be a big-game player.

“I want to be able to be a go-to guy in this league at some point,” Monahan said after the clash in the Manitoba capital. “I’m trying to earn everything I get.”

Plenty has come already to the Flames 2013 first-round draft choice in his rookie season that’s one-quarter completed, and Monahan has earned it all.

Eight goals, 14 points in 21 games is second in both categories among all rookies.

Those numbers, even with a minus-7 rating, will earn the coach’s good graces.
