CALGARY - Before Calgary Flames callup Reto Berra had ever made one start or even made one save at the National Hockey League level, he had a believer.

His head coach, Bob Hartley.

“It’s hard, as a goalie, when your coach thinks you’re bad,” Berra pointed out.

That’s not the case here.

Before his dandy debut in Sunday’s 3-2 overtime victory against the Chicago Blackhawks at the Madhouse on Madison, there were plenty of hints that

Hartley and others within the Flames organization figured Berra could be the solution to their puck-stopping puzzle.

Before he was summoned Saturday from the American Hockey League’s Abbotsford Heat, it always seemed to be a matter of when, not if, the 26-year-old Berra would make his debut between the pipes for the crew from Calgary.

The Flames hoped it would go well.

They could only have dreamed it would be a 42-save performance against a squad that has raised two Stanley Cup banners in a four-year span.
