SAN JOSE - The Calgary Flames generated scoring chances while things were close in the portion of action.

They received more than just a handful of big stops from their goaltender.

That determination from start to finish was again evident, including a solid comeback attempt.

And they still were eaten alive by the San Jose Sharks in Saturday’s 6-3 defeat in Northern California.

Is that more of an indictment on the Flames or proof of how good the Sharks are at this point in the NHL season?

As much as the positive early start to the season for the Flames created all kinds of happy vibes, you knew soon enough there would be days like this, when all the try in the world wouldn’t be enough to compete with the NHL’s top teams.

The Sharks are indeed in that elite stratosphere, and they put every reason on full display in handing the Flames their second loss in as many outings to start their gruelling five-game road trip.
