Bob Hartley hasn’t been hanging around the Saddledome as long as, say, Harvey the Hound, but it takes a little more to get a thumbs-up from the Calgary Flames’ head coach.

So Hartley’s glowing assessment of Sven Baertschi’s performance in Wednesday’s 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens?

It means something.

A lot, actually.

“That’s, by far, the best game that I’ve seen Sven Baertschi play in Calgary,” Hartley said after Thursday’s practice at the Saddledome. “He competed. He was on the puck. He took a run at P.K. Subban, went hard at the net. That’s what I want to see from him.”

Baertschi just turned 21 and has only 29 NHL appearances on his resume (Hartley has been in the house for two dozen of those), but the talented winger will certainly take the praise after some harsh words from brand-new head of hockey operations Brian Burke at the tail-end of training camp.

Baertschi scored his first goal of the season in the opening period
