COLUMBUS - You get the feeling that Calgary Flames rookie Sean Monahan will eventually think back to this 27-hour whirlwind, capped by a goal in Friday’s 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets, and realize how special it was.

First NHL game? Check.

In Washington, no less, against superstar wrecking-ball Alex Ovechkin and the rest of the Capitals.

First NHL assist? Check.

The result of hard-work in the neutral zone at Verizon Center in D.C., with Flames winger David Jones racing away and threading the top shelf.

First NHL scar? Check.

Monahan has about a half-dozen stitches above his right eye, a future reminder of a run-in with an unknown opponent.
