CALGARY - From the outside looking in, it’s evident this is one of the most important seasons in Mike Cammalleri’s career as the first half of the NHL season is essentially an audition for 29 other teams.

Given his age (31), his salary-cap hit (US$6 million), his contract status (final year) and the long-term rebuild under way in Calgary, Cammalleri will undoubtedly be traded by the swap deadline.

Such a reality makes it all the more important for the former 30-goal scorer to get off to a start good enough to attract a healthy return on the open market so the Calgary Flames can further expedite the re-do.

That’s what is troublesome about a hand injury suffered in Cammalleri’s only pre-season appearance that has shelved him for the remainder of the silly season and puts his status up in the air for opening night.

But Cammalleri doesn’t look at his future like that at all.
